On Thursday we wrapped up the last day of Session 3 and the last day of SEP Summer 2018 with Final Project Day! Many classes created projects to showcase their learning. Students had the opportunity to visit several classes to check out their peers' work.

Students in "Exploration Earth" displayed the leaves, rocks, and aquatic life they collected! More photos of the animals they caught can be see in the Day 3 Field Trip post

In "To Demolish, Or Not to Demolish," students created their own architectural wonders using popsicles sticks. They also worked as a class to research the relocation of Varsity Hall on the Grounds of UVA. The building opened in 1858 to serve as an infirmary, following a typhoid outbreak in Charlottesville. It continued to serve as the University's infirmary during the 19th century, most notably during the Civil War. In the 20th century the building use changed several times, serving as a fraternity house, nurse housing, athlete housing, and an Air Force ROTC building. In 2005, Varsity Hall was relocated 185ft down the Lawn to allow for the McIntire Commerce School to be moved back to the lawn. The students created posters highlights the history, construction, design, and relocation of Varsity Hall.

In "A Hitchhiker's Guide to Government," students created projects to demonstrate their understanding of the legislative process and branches of government. Groups included a Jeopardy skit, a newscast, and a song.

Students in "Building a Better Board Game" taught students from other classes how to play their final board games.

Students in "So You Want a Revolution?" have been working on their own revolutions. Over the last few days, students have researched a problem in the world and formulated a solution. They created informational posters and an artifact e to demonstrate a part of their solution.

In "Making History", students learned about technology and art developments throughout history. Students worked together to create Archimedes Screw, Egyptian Pyramids, DaVinci's parachute, medieval drawbridges, and simple machines.

At break, Dr. Dietz, who teaches "Electric/Automated Vehicles" brought at Chevy Volt for students to examine.

In "All About Automata," students used cardboard to create their own automaton!

Final projects ended with a brain surgery! Students in "What's in Your Skull?" had to remove tumors, in the form of packing peanuts, from a jello brain. Each group was given "medicine" to inject in their brain to dissolve the tumor. Students had to correctly position their syringe to reach the tumor without damaging the brain.

We hope your child at a fun and enriching time at camp this summer! We enjoyed interacting with such bright minds and loved seeing all of the amazing, innovative work they produced!
