Alexa Dostart
  1. I have created artwork for science related textbooks. 

  2. I lived and worked on the Appalachian Trail for three months building and rehabbing sections of the trail.

Catherine Green
  1. I have worn many hats at SEP. I have been a camper, a counselor, an academic intern, and now a teacher!

  2. I am a Double Hoo! I received my BA and now I'm working on my MT from UVA.

  3. I volunteer at an equine therapy farm in my spare time.

Claire-Marie Brisson
  1. I’m a doctoral candidate in the Department of French also working as the program assistant to the J-Term in Berlin and Weimar and a part-time translator.

  2. My Canada-US roots run deep. My family are from Québec, but I grew up in Metro Detroit. 

  3. I’m a major foodie! One of my life goals is to visit Julia Child’s kitchen in France and make my way through a few  Michelin star restaurants.

Elizabeth Dorton
  1. 1. I am a Spanish doctoral student at UVa, and have spent lots of time abroad.

  2. 2. I love all animals, and have two cats that live with me here in Charlottesville.

  3. 3. My dogs, Fidget and Wonka, are registered therapy dogs, and I take them to visit children's libraries, special-needs schools, and nursing homes.

Rachel Newman

  1. I just graduated with a master's degree in 19th century British Literature from UVA.

  2. I have moved 15 times in my life (and will be making that 16 times this fall!)

Renata Germino

  1. I am originally from Charlottesville.

  2. I graduated from Duke and Harvard.

  3. During the school year, I work with newcomer English language learners.  Our students this year are from Afghanistan, Burma, Colombia, Congo,  El Salvador, Honduras, Iraq, Nepal, and Syria.

Tierre Sanford

  1. I can make balloon arches, but I can’t blow up a balloon.

  2. I organize my books by color.

  3. I make it a point to go to Russia every other summer. Russia 2018 here I come! 

Tom Dietz

  1. I have a Ph.D in Chemistry from Rice University.   During my graduate studies at Rice I developed some novel experimental methods enabled the studies of molecular clusters at very low temperatures.  These experimental methods were ultimately utilized by two of my thesis advisors to discover a new form of molecular carbon called Buckminsterfullerene.  For this work they were awarded the Noble prize for Chemistry in 1996.

  2. After my time at Rice University I joined Exxon in the research for their lubricants business.  The spent the next 32 years in various business, technical and managerial positions.  I retired from ExxonMobil in December 2013. 

  3. Since retiring I have been busy in a number of areas.  In 2016 we built at zero energy home in Afton Virginia.  We have also started a small vineyard, have a small orchard and raise chickens and bees on this property.  Am still active in the lubricants business as a consultant and am the Lubricants Director for 11 plc, the sole authorized distributor for Mobil Fuels and Lubricants in Nigeria. I travel frequently to Nigeria to oversee this business.

Anthony Smith
  1. I'm married to Renata Germino.

  2. I teach English at Monticello High School.

  3. I enjoy gardening, soccer, and building stuff.

Cat Gamboa
  1. I’ve lived in Hawaii.

  2. I can play three different instruments (percussion, ukulele, bass).

  3. I have a pet betta fish named Gabriel.

  1. I have over 50 different unique board games. 

  2. I like hiking out on the Blue Ridge Parkway!

  3. SEP was my first actual teaching job!

Daniel Shutt
  1. I taught 3rd grade for two years.

  2. I spent a summer playing banjo on street corners in Washington DC.

  3. I am extremely proud of being from North Carolina

Hannah Glatt
  1. I have three different citizenships/passports!

  2. I will (hopefully) be a triple Hoo and graduate from UVA three times. 

  3. I have either played or coached field hockey for the past 13 years.

Kyle Chattleton
  1. I spent almost my entire life in Southern California before moving to Virginia, where I enjoy hiking, fishing, skiing, golfing, and reading books on past Presidents.

  2. Some of my favorite shows include Game of Thrones, Battlestar Galactica, and The West Wing.

  3. I can play the saxophone, piano, and oboe and I have a large collection of vinyl records.

Lily Greenway
  1. I’m a philosophy Ph.D student and I study normative ethics. My particular interests are the ethics of the everyday and moral mediocrity. 

  2. I have a dog named Enchilada.

  3. I’ve seen every episode of Star Trek ever produced. (My favorite series is Deep Space Nine.)

  1. ​I just graduated from the University of Virginia! (I’m the one in the middle.)

  2. I’m originally from Los Angeles, California. 

  3. I love music, especially Panic! At the Disco!

Michael Farabaugh
  1. Summer 2018 marks my 11th consecutive year with SEP!

  2. I came in 2nd place in the 2012 Jeopardy! Teachers Tournament.

  3. I have four daughters... ages 21, 19, 17, and 14.

  1. I am an international student from Lithuania who lived in a number of countries throughout my life — Lithuania, Norway, Germany and the US;

  2. I love hiking (especially in the US National Parks!);

  3. Before choosing a career in economics and political science I was considering a musician’s career. I played flute in the youth symphonic orchestra of Lithuania. 

Thomas Hefele

  1. I’m an avid outdoorsman, hiker, and traveler. I’ve hiked the Rockies, Alps, Shenandoah, Zion, the Grand Canyon, Arches National Park, and much more. 

  2.  I love language learning! I learned Spanish while living in Madrid, and have started to improve my Portuguese since graduating. 

  3. Photography is one of my favorite hobbies! I started last year; some of my favorite shots are landscapes of parks I visit, the Milky Way, and sunrises.
