It may be gloomy in Charlottesville this week but the classrooms at SEP are still full of energy and creativity!

On Friday in "What's In Your Skull?" students worked in groups to research a brain disorder of their choice. Some topics of study included ADHD, Schizophrenia, and epilepsy. After finding the origins, effects, treatment, famous people with their disorder, students created visuals to display their research. Yesterday students completed a gallery walk where they walked around the room, looking at each other's work to learn more about brain disorders. If you would like to see the photos enlarged, right click a photo and select "open in a new tab."

In "Imagination and Invention" students transformed books into creatures by folding the pages.

In "Exploring Properties of Gases," Mr. Fabaugh led a demonstration showing elements changing states. He began by filling a test tube with liquid methane. Then he filled a cup with liquid nitrogen and placed the test tube in the cup, causing the methane to freeze. He turned the solid back into a gas by lighting it on fire.

Next, he performed a demonstration with dry ice. He placed a block of dry ice into a container of water, creating a gas. Then, he dipped a paper towel into soapy water, and ran the paper towel over the container with dry ice. A massive soap bubble formed over the container! The addition of more soap to the container created numerous bubbles.

Meanwhile, students in "Hitchhikers Guide to the Government" created board games about the law making process!

Students in "Exploration Earth" walked around the St. Anne's campus and identified different types of trees. They collected leaves from various trees which they will use later in the week in their guide books and to create informational posters.

Students in "So You Want a Revolution?" began the session by creating their own definitions of a revolution. Later in the week they wrote the Declaration of Independence in their own words. On Friday they concluded with a poetry slam! Each student wrote a poem about an issue they are passionate about and presented in front of the class.
