On Friday, students in "What's In Your Skull?" researched a brain disorder of their choosing including Alzheimers, OCD, Depression, ADHD, and Dyslexia. Students took note of the symptoms, effects, how the disorder is developed, treatments, and famous people with the disorder. Then, they created brochures to showcase their information.
Last week students in "Exploration Earth"gathered leaves from various trees around St. Anne's and classified which kind of tree they came from. On Friday, students worked in groups to research one of the trees they found on the school property and created posters.
In "The Science and Policy of Sustainable Energy" students took a field trip to Ruffner Hall on the grounds of UVA to see solar panels. Students learned how these solar panels work from two employees within UVA's Facility Management department. Each solar panel found on the roof of this building costs about $200. When working together at peak performance the panels can produce about 275kW dc, which is enough energy to power 25-30 homes. The power produced from the solar panels on Ruffner is sent back to Dominion Energy. However, solar panels located on other building on Grounds produce energy that goes directly back into the building. Students got to see the panels on the roof as well as the inverter and transformer on the ground. At the end of the presentation, each student received a solar grasshopper!
