In"Folklore, Fables, Fairytales, and Their Retelling In Russia" Ms. Sanford read a children's book adaption of Ivan Tsarevitch, the Firebird, and the Grey Wolf. In this tale, a king possesses a tree that bears golden apples. Each night a firebird reportedly steals an apple from the tree. The king promised his sons that whoever caught the bird would receive half of his kingdom and become the heir. The story follows Ivan, the youngest son, on his quest to find the firebird. While Ms. Sanford read aloud, Igor Stravinsky's ballet Firebird played to offer a visual representation.

After spending the past few days learning different types of game board and playing several games themselves, students in "Building a Better Game Board" worked in groups to start designing their own games! They had to consider what type of game they wanted to create, such as cooperative, player elimination, and press your luck. Students could choose any format of player for their game as well. Games could be played with any combination of a board, cards, dice, or blocks. Next Thursday, students will present their final products for the rest of the camp to play!

Downstairs, students in "Inside Out: The Social Life of Emotions" examined emotions through the role of gender and how society shapes emotion. The class began by examining how anger is seen in society. Mr. Shutt explained how historically it was not acceptable for woman to express anger. Scold's bridle was developed in Britain in the 1500s to prevent woman from speaking. At the time, the word scold was defined as a "rude clamorous woman." A woman believed to be demonstrating these characteristics would have to wear this restrictive mask. Then students examined the perceptions of emotions today through two film clips. After watching the following clip from "Inside Out," the class discussed how the mom and dad's emotions were expressed.

The class also watched a portion of "The Mask You Live In," a documentary about how boys and young men struggle with expressing their emotions, especially when this action is not associated with masculinity.
